Gio Gonzalez is just edging out R.A. Dickey in latest computer rankings of NL starting pitchers released by Bias Free Rankings. It’s clear either Gonzalez or Dickey will win the Cy Young, and probably the edge would probably go to Dickey, who leads in most of the statistical categories except for wins. And because the Nationals are going to the playoffs and the Mets are going nowhere, baseball writers somehow give more credence to that — but shouldn’t. The Cy Young should go to the best pitcher, period, regardless of how the team has done when he HASN’T pitched.

“The Cy Young should go to the best pitcher, period, regardless of how the team has done when he HASN’T pitched.” That is an absurd statement. However, if you want to know how the Mets have done when they were pitching, how about this: The Nationals have scored seven runs or more in half of Gonzalez’s 20 victories. The Mets have scored five runs or less in thirteen of Dickey’s 19 wins.
