R.A. Dickey and David Price lead top AL and NL pitchers (barely) in latest computer rankings

In the latest MLB computer rankings of NL and AL computer rankings just posted by Bias Free Sports, R.A. Dickey of the Mets just edges out Gio Gonzalez of the Nationals in the NL ratings.   These two will likely be the candidates for the NL’s Cy Young award, although don’t count out Johnny Cueto of the Reds, who also has a chance to get to 20 wins before the season is over.

Over in the AL, David Price has a very slim lead over Justin Verlander for the overall number one ranking, but I think the Cy Young award will come down to Price or Jered Weaver, because most Cy Young voters value wins over any other category, and Weaver is the only 20 game winner in the AL.  Price can still get there, and if so, I think he locks up the award.  You can see the complete rankings for all pitchers and hitters by going to www.biasfreerankings.mlbplayerratings.htm and following the links for each category on that page.

Week 4 NFL elimination pool pick

Could last week have gone any worse?  Anyone that had San Francisco, New Orleans, Green Bay or Detroit last week knows what I’m talking about. Did replacement refs have a lot to do with the upsets?  Probably only in Green Bay (and if you were eliminated because of that call, my heart goes out to you).  Since I’ve now been eliminated in both of my pools by unbelievable upsets, all I can do at this point is wish you luck and give you what my ratings say are the biggest spreads of potential victory under my computer system. Good luck!

This week, the top predicted winners are:

1.  Baltimore by 12.6 over Cleveland

2.  Houston by 11.54 over Tennessee

3. Atlanta by 9.72 over Carolina

4. Seattle by 8.56 over St. Louis

5. Arizona by 8.20 over Miami

Latest NCAA QB Ratings from Bias Free Sports

So I’ve been a little late in posting here lately after taking some final vacation time in Utah, and hopefully all the batteries are recharged and ready to go.  There are a lot of NCAA QB’s who need their batteries recharged after looking at the latest rankings from Bias Free Sports (Eastern Michigan, it probably isn’t shaping up to be your season when you have TWO QB’s ranked in the bottom five).  A big salute to the Big 12, who have the top four ranked QB’s, although that’s sure to change as conference play starts.  You can see all the team rankings and projected matchups for this weekend’s games by going to www.biasfreerankings.com/NCAAfbratings.html.

NFL Elimination Pool Picks Week 3 from Bias Free Sports

In this week’s edition of the NFL elimination pool picks, we are staying as far away as possible from Stephen Gostkowski, who blew up thousands upon thousands of elimination pool entries with his errant kick at the end of the New England/Arizona game (although I don’t blame him (after all he had four field goals already made in the game) as much as I blame Coach Genius Belichick for settling for a long field goal attempt with over 40 seconds to play and not attempting to get in closer.  Don’t outsmart yourself Bill!

So one of my picks was dumped (along with many of yours as well, I’m sure) by that kick, leaving me alive in one pool.   The beauty of these types of contests is that upsets happen so frequently that it’s rare that the pools last the season.  A majority of players are booted out before 8 games are even played.   We’re going to try and get to the halfway point with what I think has to be the surest pick on the board in San Francisco.  While they are playing at Minnesota, if Minnesota isn’t the worst team in the NFL, it’s pretty damn close.  While I typically hate using a great team so early in the season (see what happened with Arizona?) I want to stay alive and San Francisco is almost a certainty to do it.

If you’ve already used San Francisco, my next favorites (in order) are New Orleans (I can’t see them going 0-3 to start the season, especially against the woeful Chiefs), Pittsburgh (ok maybe Oakland is actually worse than Minnesota), and Detroit (can Tennessee be worse than both Minnesota and Oakland? Wow, so many bad teams this year).

Recap:      Pool 1                Pool 2

Week 1    Philly                   Houston
Week 2    New England      NY Giants
Week 3    eliminated           San Francisco

Week 3 NCAA QB Leaders

Bias Free Sports has assembled all the NCAA QB’s with at least 20 passing attempts to determine their ratings, which takes a synthesis of QB rating, Yards Per Attempt, TD’s Per Attempt, Completion Percentage and Turnovers.  These ratings will obviously fluctuate greatly throughout the year, so don’t read to much into the initial ratings.  Will try to post these each Monday or Tuesday as the season progresses.  For team ratings, go our web site at www.biasfreerankings.com/ncaafbratings.html.

Gonzalez, Dickey 1-2 in latest rankings of NL starting pitchers

Gio Gonzalez is just edging out R.A. Dickey in latest computer rankings of NL starting pitchers released by Bias Free Rankings.   It’s clear either Gonzalez or Dickey will win the Cy Young, and probably the edge would probably go to Dickey, who leads in most of the statistical categories except for wins.   And because the Nationals are going to the playoffs and the Mets are going nowhere, baseball writers somehow give more credence to that — but shouldn’t.  The Cy Young should go to the best pitcher, period, regardless of how the team has done when he HASN’T pitched.

Bias Free Sports NFL Elimination Pool Picks for Week 2

For those who view this blog frequently, you’ll know that last week we started with our elimination pool picks, whereby we pick a different NFL team each week that we feel is going to win, thus allowing us to advance to the next week.  I am currently participating in two different pools, and so each week I am posting my picks, allowing you to track my success, and also give everyone the oportunity to vote on what team they would choose in the poll below.

Last week with my first selection I took Philadelphia, and certainly sweated that one out to the very end.  Thank God I don’t have to struggle with taking them again.   My other selection, Houston, was a little frustrating for one and a half quarters, but then that defense kicked it into gear and it was smooth sailing for the remainder of the game.

This week is a little tougher because there are so many difficult games that could go either way.  In a week like that, you should typically go with the chalk (or odds-on favorite) pick just so you can pretty much be assured of advancing.  The chalk pick this week is New England, who is taking on the Arizona Cardinals at home.  It’s very rare for a west coast team to travel to the east coast for a 1:00 pm EST start and be successful.  Plus, New England is just too damn good to lose to Arizona.  So there’s that also.  I’m going to take the Patriots in my first contest.

The second pool pick I’m going with the Giants.   I don’t care how Tampa Bay played against the Panthers; the defending Super Bowl champions will not start the season 0-2 or Tom Coughlin’s skin will melt off his skull and lasers will shoot out his eye sockets, burning holes in every player’s chest.  This will be at least a double digit win, and thus my choice for my second pool pick.

Incidentally, we have the Patriots predicted to win in computer matchup by about 16.5, and the Giants to win by 27.5.   You can see all of Bias Free Sports’ matchup predictions by going to www.biasfreerankings.com/nfl_ratings.html.
