Bias Free Sports’ NBA Ratings Now Posted

Bias Free Sports is now posting its NBA matchup predictions on its NBA page at http://www.biasfreerankings.com/NBArankings.htm. Note that this page is best viewed in Chrome, Firefox or Safari. Explorer just doesn’t seem to read tables well.

Regarding the rankings, you should be very cautious in utilizing these rankings so early in the season. The way my model is built (primarily a margin of victory versus quality of opponent type model), it typically takes about 5-7 games for each team for the model to really start tracking accurately. So caveat emptor. I’ll put a post up in the near future giving you a rough idea of how the numbers are assimilated.

In the meantime, I’m having a real battle with myself over whether to produce NCAA basketball ratings. I have started and stopped numerous times on building the revamped model and have just looked at how much time it is taking to put that together, not to mention how much time each day it would take to input those day’s games. NBA games are easy enough because at most you might have 12 games a day. Opening night alone for the NCAA features 124 games. Every Saturday will have over 160 games. To keep ratings timely, you have to input that data as it happens, and that may not be a luxury I have. I continue to debate with myself about it, and I’m going to Vegas next week, so I’ll probably make a decision on this after my return. I don’t like posting ratings for the college teams anyway early for the same reason I gave above–you need about 4-5 games to give you a more accurate reading on a team.

Again, thoughts and prayers to all our friends on the east coast as you recover from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy.

NCAA QB Ratings after Week 9

Thoughts and prayers going out to all our friends on the East Coast as they deal with Sandy.  After living through three direct hits from hurricanes here in Texas, I can appreciate what you guys are going through.  Don’t take any chances, hunker down and hold on.  It will get better…by the way, our initial NBA ratings are up and we’ll have a further post about that tomorrow.  You can see the initial matchup predictions at www.biasfreerankings.com/NBAratings.htm.

Bias Free Sports NFL computer picks for Week 8

A tough week for everyone last week as there were a lot of close games, but hopefully this week fares better for everyone (although honestly, how many people had Tampa Bay winning AT Minnesota?).  This week’s NFL computer projections from Bias Free Sports are shown below.  Note that the home field advantage is already built in.  If the difference is negative, then the visiting team is favored, if positive, then the home team is projected to win.  For example, the Giants are favored by 4.27 points over the Cowboys (round to the nearest half point, so actually 4.5 points).  Vegas says they are a 2 point favorite, so we would say not only would they win, but they would cover the spread.  You can see all of our NFL team ratings by going to our free site at www.biasfreerankings.com/NFL_ratings.html. [UPDATE 10/27] Note that there is a slight change from the previous posting to reflect that St. Louis and New England are playing on a neutral field.

Bias Free Sports’ NCAA football picks for Week 9

Last week we were okay with our picks, going 47-9 straight up and 32-24 against the spread (these numbers can be verified at http://www.thepredictiontracker.com).  Bias Free Sports’ picks for Week 9 are below.  Note that the home field advantage is already built in.  If the difference is a negative number, the visiting team is favored, while a positive number means the home team is favored.   For example, Texas is at Kansas this week and we predict they will win by 11.06 points (rounding to the nearest whole number, by 11).  They are currently favored by 21, so we would say that they will win the game, but not cover the spread.  You can see our team rankings for every NCAA FBS team by going to our free web site at www.biasfreerankings.com/NCAAfbratings.html.  Who do you have this week?

NCAA QB ratings following Week 8 games

Bias Free Sports has released its rankings of the NCAA QB’s following the games of week 8, and Geno Smith has been dethroned as the top QB in our ratings by AJ McCarron of Alabama.  Collin Klein is also moving rapidly up the board.  Casey Pachall, while still number 2, is no longer playing at TCU and he will drop off the ratings in the near future.  These ratings are based on QB’s having at least 70 attempts and those will increase each week, so Pachall will fall off by not having enough attempts to qualify.  You can get the complete NCAA and NFL team ratings by going to Bias Free Sports!

Here are Bias Free Sports Week 7 NFL computer projections

Here are the computer projections for this weekend’s NFL games as calculated by Bias Free Sports.  We’ve gone 1-0 so far this week, both straight up and against the spread, as the 49’ers edged out the Seahawks on Thursday night.  What a difference a declined safety can make!  To read these projections, a positive number under the Difference column means that the home team is projected to win the game (home field advantage is built into the numbers).  If the number under Current Line is also positive, the home team is favored to win.  For example, Buffalo is favored by 4.01 points against Tennessee (we round to the nearest whole number, so it’s actually 4).  They are favored by 3 points, so our projections would have them winning the game and covering the spread.  If the line is a negative number, then the visiting team is favored to win.  You can get all the latest team rankings from Bias Free Sports by going to our free site at www.biasfreerankings.com/NFL_ratings.html.

Bias Free Sports’ Computer Picks for Week 8 NCAA Football Games

Here are Bias Free Sports’ computer picks for this weekend’s games (October 18th-20th) utilizing our ELO ranking model.  The home field advantage is built into the match ups.  If the number under “difference” is negative, that means the visiting team is favored.  If the number is positive, the home team is favored.  For example, Northern Illinois is projected to beat Akron by 30.93 points (actually 31, as you would round up or down to the nearest whole number).  The current line is Northern Illinois is favored by 14, so we would project that Northern Illinois would win and cover the spread.  Conversely, Clemson is favored in our rankings by 2.43 points over Virginia Tech (so 2 points), but the spread is that Clemson is favored by 8.5 points, so we would say that Clemson should win, but not cover the spread.  You can view all the team rankings by going to www.biasfreerankings.com/NCAAfbratings.html.
